Architect and Ashokan Music & Dance Camper Elizabeth Thompson Donates Design for Ashokan’s New Bathhouse
The Ashokan Center’s new outdoor shower facility is slated to open by the end of next month, with a festive ribbon-cutting ceremony—and you’re all invited! Designed by Ashokan Music & Dance camper, Elizabeth Thompson, the new bathhouse features four men’s and four women’s showers, two bathrooms, and a half-roof design that accentuates a feeling of openness and connectedness to nature.
As a practicing architect and landscape architect who focuses on designs that carefully consider the natural environment, Elizabeth was the perfect person for the job. We ‘re very lucky that she agreed to donate her talents towards creating a space that will enhance the experience of our visitors for many years to come—and keep us squeaky clean!
In addition to her architectural career, Elizabeth plays drums and bass and has been attending Music & Dance camp since 2010. Her wife, Mimi, who introduced her to Ashokan, has been a visitor and supporter since 1997. In addition to her work on the bathhouse, Elizabeth has been a valued advisor on a variety of building and trail projects throughout the Ashokan campus.
And we can’t forget to thank Barry Medenbach of Medenbach & Eggers, in Stone Ridge, who donated the civil engineering required for the wastewater system design, and who obtained the necessary permits to build the outdoor showers.
The resources for Ashokan’s new bathhouse were generously donated by Bob Holum in memory of his beloved wife Binnie. Both have been longtime Ashokan Music & Dance campers.
So please attend our ceremony once we notify you of the date. It not only recognizes the many wonderful Ashokan supporters who have joined forces to bring this exciting project together. It also gives us an occasion to get together and enjoy the beautiful Ashokan campus.
