New Outdoor Showers at Ashokan This Summer!
We are pleased to announce that Ashokan’s long awaited outdoor showers are under construction and will be completed by late June. The realization of Ashokan’s new ‘bathhouse’ was generously donated by Bob Holum in memory of his beloved wife Binnie. The bathhouse design was donated by architect Elizabeth Thompson. Both Bob and Elizabeth are longtime Ashokan Music & Dance campers.
Anne S. “Binnie” Ritchie Holum was a skater, dancer, choreographer, actor and playwright. She died in hospice care at her parents’ home near Saranac Lake, NY on September 21, 2014, and was joined in death on September 23 by her mother, Mary Anne Ritchie. Binnie believed “We’re all born dancing – we have to be taught not to dance.” She created ways for people of all ages and cultures to find community through movement and was a pioneer in liturgical dance, Contact Improvisation and studied and incorporated American Sign Language in many of her creations.
With her partner, Harvey Doster, she invented “healing theatre,” bringing stories of alienation, abuse and oppression to transformative expression on the stage. Binnie’s work continues through their daughter, Suli.
Binnie loved the woods, the Esopus Creek, the wiggly bridge and Ashokan’s mission to build community through shared experiences in nature, history and the arts. Although Binnie only visited Ashokan once, she loved what Ashokan meant to Bob and wanted their granddaughter, Coralie, to connect with our community. It means a great deal to all of us at Ashokan and to Bob to feel her presence in his favorite place.
On behalf of everyone at Ashokan and all those who come to Ashokan, thank you Bob Holum for memorializing Binnie and her work at Ashokan. Binnie and your generous gift will be remembered and enjoyed by generations to come.
