August 7-11, 2017 | Family Camp


An all-ages, hands-on experience in music, dance, storytelling, puppetry, nature, crafts, and pure play. This is not a simply a kids’ camp, but truly an experience for all members of the family and community. Librarians, teachers, and anyone who works with children will find ideas and materials to enrich their curriculum.

Classes are offered in a variety of age groups and some are mixed-age. Instructors include musicians, singers, storytellers, craftspeople, artists, performing artists, dancers, nature experts, and educators!

What can you do at Family Camp?

  • Begin or improve on the guitar, fiddle, mandolin, ukulele, or banjo.
  • Join community sings: rounds, chorus songs, call and response, and more.
  • Enjoy square and contra dancing and Appalachian clogging.
  • Hike nature trails, swim, and enjoy other outdoor games and activities.
  • Make puppets and join a puppet show.
  • Try blacksmithing, broom-making, and tinsmithing, and bring home a family heirloom.
  • Make musical instruments from “junk.”
  • Write songs and learn to lead songs.
  • Join a band, a jam session, or a parade!

This camp welcomes families with discounted youth pricing. Tuition includes all workshops, classes, concerts, dances, activities, meals, and snacks. On-site lodging is also available. Ashokan offers scholarships and work exchange opportunities to allow people of all ages and economic levels to join the Ashokan community.
