March 11, 2018 | Low Lily with John Whelan & Katy McNally in Concert

Sunday, March 11 at 7:30pm

String and vocal trio Low Lily explores the roots and branches of American folk music with traditional influences and modern inspiration that weaves together a unique brand of acoustic music. Liz Simmons (vocals and guitar), Flynn Cohen (vocals, guitar, and mandolin), and Lissa Schneckenburger (vocals and fiddle) are masterful players with deep relationships to traditional music styles ranging from bluegrass to Irish, Scottish, New England, and Old Time Appalachian sounds. When you combine this with stellar composition skills and inventive arrangements you get music that is rooted, yet contemporary.

Although accordionist John Whelan grew up near London in Dunstable, England, he was raised on the fiddle and pipe music of Ireland, and his artistry blossomed in America. He moved to the US in 1980, and soon was performing with Riverdance fiddler Eileen Ivers (who also performed with Hall and Oates) in one of the most celebrated Irish duos of the decade. As an instrumentalist, composer, producer and arranger who brings both passion and playfulness to his music while respecting the tradition that it’s rooted in, John Whelan has richly earned the Irish Echo’s highest honor for traditional music.

Katie McNally has made waves in both the American folk music scene and abroad since the release of her debut album, Flourish, in 2013. Recent covergirl for Fiddler Magazine, Katie has performed and taught fiddle courses in the U.S., Canada, Spain, Scotland, England, and France. A student of acclaimed fiddler Hanneke Cassel, Katie has played at the Newport Folk Festival, the Barns at Wolf Trap, The Freight and Salvage, The Festival of American Fiddle Tunes, Benaroya Hall, as well as various folk venues throughout North America. In addition to her busy touring schedule, she is a devoted educator whose teaching style was molded by years of attendance at fiddle camps where learning music is about joy and community and fun!
