The Ashokan Center recognizes the urgency of the climate crisis and how we all need to play our part in the global transition to clean, renewable energy.
With this in mind, we’re excited to launch the Ashokan Climate Action Fund. This initiative will support the Ashokan Center—New York’s first outdoor environmental education center—in achieving its ambitious goal of becoming fossil fuel free by 2030, setting a powerful example of sustainable possibilities.

Our new Ashokan Climate Action Fund will support our goal of eliminating Ashokan’s use of fossil fuels through a variety of initiatives, such as…
- Retrofit existing buildings with geothermal or air source heat pumps instead of propane for HVAC and hot water.
- Adopt induction kitchen stoves and ovens
- Expand our solar energy capacity as needed
- Purchase electric onsite vehicles and install EV chargers
- Properly maintain these important innovations
- Share our journey through clear signage, compelling social and broadcast media content, and immersive onsite tours that showcase our commitment and impact with the goal of inspiring others to follow our lead.
Here are some of the steps we’re already taking to serve as a model for sustainability in New York.
- All construction since 2013 has incorporated energy efficient, sustainable design and materials
- Our solar panels generate 75% of our electrical needs.
- Our new Office & Health Center features geothermal heating and cooling
- Some lodging already uses air source heat pumps
- We source much of our produce locally supplemented by a kitchen garden
- We compost food, paper and other compostable waste
- Our people mover golf carts and ATVs are all fully electric
