This past spring, the Ashokan Center welcomed 533 attendees for a day celebrating the magic of maple sugaring. From the first steps onto our campus, visitors were immersed in the sights, sounds, and flavors of early spring in the Catskills.
Families and friends began the day with a hearty pancake breakfast, featuring vegan and gluten-free options, fueling up for a full day of exploration and fun. Across campus, visitors had the chance to see sugar maples tapped and watch the sap boil down into golden syrup in our historic Sugar Shack. The process, steeped in centuries of tradition, offered a hands-on lesson in both nature and history, connecting participants to a long-standing Northeastern practice.
Music filled the air throughout the day, from the lively tunes of Conor Wenk to the heartfelt fiddling and singing of Jay Ungar and Molly Mason, and the skill and youthful energy of the Strawberry Hill Fiddlers. Families also enjoyed the driving rhythms of Bugs on a Log and the joyful sounds of a square dance led by caller Nicole Ball.
Beyond music, attendees explored guided hikes around our scenic campus, discovering the natural beauty of early spring and the awakening forest. Our blacksmithing demonstrations offered hands-on learning
for ages eight and up, while younger guests enjoyed creative kids’ activities designed to spark curiosity and fun.
It was a delight to see so many people of all ages tapping trees, sampling maple syrup, dancing, and enjoying the simple pleasures of a spring day at Ashokan. The combination of music, nature, and maple magic created a memorable experience that brought the community together in celebration of this sweet season.
We are grateful to our incredible staff for making the day possible and to the musicians and artists who kept the music flowing all day long.
Next up, we invite you to join us for Earth Fest on Sunday, April 19, for another day of outdoor adventure, live music, hands-on learning, and family fun.
