For longtime Ashokan friend and supporter Peter Yarensky, his first visit to Northern Week in 1991 changed everything.

At first, he was skeptical—would music and dance camps feel cliquish or intimidating? But what he found at Ashokan was something completely different.

Thanks to Jay and Molly and their very generous, friendly and welcoming attitudes, I saw that Ashokan was the opposite of exclusionary. It was a community. A family.”

From that very first week, camping in the pines, dancing each night under the stars, and learning from inspiring teachers, Peter felt like he had stepped into a magical world that made more sense than the one outside.

“I decided that Ashokan was the real world, and the rest of the year was just waiting to go back.”

Peter recalls late-night jam sessions, laughter over meals, and the unforgettable moment when a Québécois step dancer ended up dancing on top of a table.

Even though he’s no longer able to attend in person, Ashokan still holds a central place in his heart.

“Just knowing it’s there makes the world a better place. So I’m happy to contribute and grateful for all that you do.”

We’re grateful too, Peter—for your words, your memories, and your enduring belief in the power of this community.

Have a story like Peter’s? We’d love to hear it.
