February at the Ashokan Center was alive with music, beginning with the Winter Hoot’s traditional Sunday Sing-Along, where singers and strummers of all ages shared both old favorites and new discoveries.

The following two weekends were devoted to Fiddles in the Forest, a dynamic program developed and led by Aldo Lavaggi, with Austin Scelzo and Ruth Ungar. Young string players from the Friends School of Baltimore, Half Hollow Hills in Connecticut, and the local Onteora School District came together for this exciting musical gathering.

Fiddles in the Forest encourages students and their teachers to listen, learn, sing, and play music together in a collaborative and fun environment. All of the music is taught by ear, with activities ranging from body percussion and singing rounds to fiddle tunes drawn from a variety of musical traditions.

The weekends also featured an evening square dance, a student talent show, a guided nature hike, and even the opportunity to try a blacksmithing project. This blend of music, creativity, and outdoor adventure made for a memorable experience for all participants.
