Nord Anglia International School, New York at the Ashokan Center
Earlier this month, we welcomed students and educators from Nord Anglia International School, New York to the Ashokan Center for a week of exploration, challenge, and connection in the outdoors.
From the moment they arrived, the energy was clear. Days quickly filled with activity and discovery—canoeing across the water, zip lining through the trees, testing focus in archery, and stepping back in time through hands-on experiences in the schoolhouse. Evenings brought a different kind of magic, with campfires, songs, and s’mores under the stars.
For many students, it was their first time spending extended time in nature. The Cathedral Gorge hike quickly became a favorite, with students climbing hills, spotting wildlife, and pausing to take in the waterfall and surrounding landscape. Others were drawn to the schoolhouse experience, where history came to life in a way that felt immediate and real.
“There are so many standout moments,” shared one of their teachers. “But what stands out most is watching how children grow and respond to new challenges. The ones who push through really make the most of the trip and grow as individuals in ways they bring back to school.”
Throughout the week, students explored everything from pond ecosystems and local habitats to survival skills, maple sugaring, and traditional crafts like broom making and blacksmithing. Along the way, they spotted salamanders, frogs, insects, and even a snake—small discoveries that made a big impression.
Beyond the activities, what emerged was something deeper. Students practiced teamwork through group challenges, built resilience by stepping outside their comfort zones, and developed confidence as they navigated new environments and experiences.
“The experience had a huge impact on the children,” their teacher reflected. “They learned new skills, built resilience, and spent time away from home putting those skills into practice in a meaningful way.”
For the educators, the consistency of the Ashokan experience continues to stand out. “We have been coming back time and time again,” they shared. “The staff are always incredibly friendly, knowledgeable, and welcoming. That’s what makes it so special.”
By the end of the week, there were muddy shoes, tired legs, and a sense of accomplishment that comes from trying something new. It was a week filled with moments—big and small—that will stay with these students long after they’ve returned to the classroom.
To future visiting schools, their advice is simple: come ready to jump in. Try something new, encourage your students to do the same, and make the most of every moment.
