Ashokan’s Homestead, a two-story dovetail log home built in the 1970’s, was found in disrepair when the Ashokan Center, Inc. took over the site’s programs and stewardship in 2008.
A new phase of restoration work on the Homstead began in 2023 and has included the skillful re-creation and replacment of the structure’s lower logs, reconstruction of the stone foundation, roof repair, and the addition of a subterranean drainage system designed to prevent future foundation damage.
Now students coming to Ashokan’s Outdoor Education programs will get a hands-on experience with the past by traveling back to 18th and 19th-century life, the time period that the Homestead is furnished to represent.
The work is being lead by AFCO Construction headed by Frank Ajiataz, has halted for winter. Work will continue this spring with more roof detailing, restoration of the spring house, and other delicate jobs with an estimated project completion date to be in mid-spring.
You can visit Ashokan’s Homestead and check in on our progress! Once on site, with a Day Pass or for an event or program, find the Homestead on our trail map which is about a 20-minute hike from the parking area. Happy Hiking!
