Translucent Borders Weekend 2025

Music and dance defy borders. This weekend of learning offers an opportunity for musicians and dancers from different world traditions to share in a tapestry of songs, tunes, dances and stories.

In celebration of Earth month, journey through world music and dance styles, learning traditional techniques from West Africa, The Middle East and Northern Europe. Masters of the kanun (Arab zither), nyckelharpa, Ghanaian dance and drum, and Middle Eastern song will offer instrumental, singing and dance workshops. The schedule will also include sharing circles, storytelling and jam sessions, culminating in a public concert of student and master teacher performances.

Scholarships

YOUTH SCHOLARSHIP is for campers age 25 and under who are paying their own way and for families in need of financial support. Please self-select this tier. PAY IT FORWARD SCHOLARSHIP is for performers and teachers who will pass on the music, songs, or dance forms they learn at Ashokan to new audiences and to the next generation. Learn more and apply here.

SULLEY IMORO | dance, drumming, singing

Sulley Imoro, visiting artist from Ghana, is a celebrated performer and teacher of traditional music and dance. His skills include dance, drumming, and song of the Dagomba, Dagara, Ewe, and Ga tribes. Sulley has played a significant role in reviving several dance genres that were gradually being lost due to modernization. He is the director and founder of the Mbangba Cultural Troupe and the Degara Bawa Culture group of Tamale, Ghana. He has also served as a dance instructor for the Dagara Music and Arts Center, the dance ensemble at the University of Ghana at Legon, and as the assistant director of the Saakumu Dance Troupe. With over 20 years of teaching and performing experience throughout the U.S., Europe, and Africa, Sulley has established himself as a leading expert in African drumming and dance. He has been an artist-in-residence at Ithaca College, California Institute of the Arts, Loyola Marymount University, and Tufts University. Sulley is the founder of the Kali Music Center, where students from around the world visit for workshops and lessons. In Ghana, he is often called upon to perform for high-profile visitors, including former U.S. President Bill Clinton, with his ensemble entertaining crowds of thousands.

AMAL MURKUS | singing

Amal Murkus is a Palestinian singer and actress of international renown, often called the Voice of Palestine for her powerful vocals and ability to blend traditional Arab music with global influences such as pop, rock, jazz, and Western classical. Her remarkable collaborations include performances with Joan Baez, Mercedes Sosa, Glykeria, Noa, Anouar Brahem, Enzo Avitabile, and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra of Liverpool. She has also worked on projects with celebrated Palestinian poets Mahmoud Darwish and Sameh Al-Qasem. Recognized for both her artistry and community work, she was named one of the most beautiful voices of the 20th century by Austrian TV in 2001 after starring in ARTE TV’s Premadonas Fest.
FIRAS ZREIK | kanun

Firas Zreik is a composer and Kanunist who has redefined global perceptions of the Kanun, blending its deep roots in the Maqam tradition with contemporary sounds. Since 2013, the Palestine-born New Yorker has performed worldwide as both a leader and sought-after collaborator, appearing at venues such as Lincoln Center, The Jazz Gallery, Joe’s Pub, The Smithsonian Museum, and the Carthage International Festival. A Berklee College of Music graduate on a full presidential scholarship, he has been an Artist-in-Residence at the Blue Mountain Center and a MacDowell Fellow. Recognized on the Arab America Foundation’s "30 Under 30" list, he also teaches and has led workshops at Berklee, NYU Abu Dhabi, Tufts, and the Arabic Music Retreat.
BRONWYN BIRD | nyckelharpa, singing

Bronwyn Bird is an accomplished nyckelharpa player based in Lambertville NJ, known for her expertise in Scandinavian and American folk music. She graduated from Berklee College of Music (Boston, MA) and the Eric Sahlström Institute (Tobo, Sweden), where she refined her craft under world-renowned instructors. Bronwyn is the first American nyckelharpa player to win the Samspelsmedaljen (Gold Medal for Twin Performance) and even built her own instrument. She teaches both traditional Scandinavian and American folk music styles and performs across the U.S. and Europe. In addition to her musical career, Bronwyn is a board-certified music therapist and the co-founder of the Birdhouse Center for the Arts, a creative space dedicated to artistic learning and community. As a performer and educator, Bronwyn is passionate about sharing her knowledge of the nyckelharpa, as well as traditional song and dance, offering workshops and private lessons to students of all ages and abilities.

ANDY TEIRSTEIN | camp organizer

Andy is a composer, teacher, performer, writer and producer. His work has been described by The New York Times as "magical,"  "ingenious," and "superbly crafted."  A student of Leonard Bernstein and Henry Brant, Teirstein composes for concert hall, film (BBC, PBS), theater, and dance.  Dance critic Deborah Jowitt stated that his music “seems to speak in celestial accents of some utopia whose chief industry is dancing,” and he has composed often for choreographers, including Donald Byrd, Stephen Petronio, and Liz Lerman. His recent CDs include Restless Nation and Open Crossings. As an actor, he performed on Broadway in Barnum and in the film Sophie’s Choice, and was an original cast member of the show Woody Sez, which toured Europe, Palestine, Israel, and China before an Off-Broadway run. Teirstein has written award-winning music theater works, including A Blessing on the Moon and Winter Man. As an Arts Professor at Tisch School of the Arts, he teaches music and writing in the Dance Department, and Songwriting in the NYU Prison Education Program. He was recently Director of Translucent Borders, an NYU research group exploring dance and music at borders of cultural difference around the world.

Payment/Cancellation/Refund Policy

You may pay in full or hold your place with a deposit of 25% per person if registering 4 or more weeks before camp. Full payment is due 4 weeks before camp begins. To cancel your camp registration, email events@ashokancenter.org

• We retain $50 per person for cancellations requested up to 4 weeks before camp begins, and for COVID-related cancellations made at any date.

• We retain your 25% deposit between 4 and 2 weeks before camp.

• We retain the full registration amount within 2 weeks of camp.

Pricing & What's Included!

You may choose to pay up front or pay a deposit and balance. Balance payment is due 4 weeks before the event.

Registration includes all activities and meals. Lodging is optional and camping is free.

Children under 5 attend for free (under 3 for Family Camp). Campers under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Food & Drink

All meals are included. You may indicate your dietary restrictions when registering. We make every effort to include a range of allergen-free dishes and to inform diners of meal ingredients.

The Ashokan Center is licensed to serve beer and wine in Esopus Lodge (the main building). The bar is generally open from late afternoon to early evening. Sorry, by law, guests are prohibited from bringing their own alcoholic beverages into this licensed building.

Lodging

LONGHOUSE BUNKS: Rooms hold up to 24 people and are designated women, men, or all gender. Place your belongings on a top or bottom bunk after you check in to claim it. Pillows are available, please bring your own blankets, sheets, pillowcases, and towels. There are a small number of light blankets for those bunkhouse residents who are unable to bring one of their own. If you will need us to provide one, please let us know well in advance.

PRIVATE ROOMS: There are a limited number of private rooms that must be reserved in advance at extra charge. Pillows are available, please bring your own sheets, pillowcases, and towelsThere are light quilts in each private room.

CAMPSITES: Camping is available with access to bathrooms and outdoor showers. Please park by your campsite only if you plan to leave your car in place for the duration of the camp.

What To Bring

If you’re lodging with us please remember to bring a blanket and linens (or sleeping bag), towel, toiletries, soap, flashlight, earplugs (for light sleepers). There are light quilts in each private room and we have a small number of light blankets for bunkhouse residents who can’t bring one of their own. Let us know well in advance if you’ll need one.

Flashlight, recording device, camera (or maybe those are all your phone!)

Comfortable informal clothing for wet and dry weather. Some may also bring dressy, wild or fun clothing as well but that is up to you! There’s no laundry on site so bring enough clothes for the camp.

DRIVING DIRECTIONS   Take NY State Thruway (1-87) to Kingston exit #19. From traffic circle take Route 28 West (toward Pine Hill). In 12 miles (shortly after Mobil & Citgo) turn left onto Reservoir Rd. Cross the Ashokan Reservoir, turn left at the Tee. Head down the hill, pass the first left (Rt 28A East) and merge onto 28A West. Take next left onto Beaverkill Rd. Follow Beaverkill for about one mile, then turn right into the Ashokan Center driveway and follow the signs.

AIRPORT  Albany, NY (ALB) is the closest major airport (about 1.5 hours away). Public transportation is available from the airport to the Kingston bus station, where you can take a taxi to Ashokan. Or contact us at least one month before your program begins for a list of people driving from the Albany area who may be able to give you a ride.

Covid Safety Policy

We recommend but no longer require everyone test for COVID-19 in the 24 hours before arrival. 

All refund requests due to a positive test, COVID exposure, or COVID-related concerns will be honored (less a $50 administrative fee).

We will provide onsite rapid testing upon request.

The Ashokan Center builds community through shared experiences in nature, history, music and art. We have hosted traditional Music & Dance Camps at our 385 acre nature preserve for over 40 years. In 2020 we learned how to host them online and in 2021 we began to reimagine how to gather in person once again.

Come join the Ashokan family to celebrate, learn, connect, deepen your music, make new friends, and brighten your day. Our events are open to all folks, all ages and all orientations.
