August is National Make-A-Will Month—a perfect time to reflect on what matters most and ensure your values live on. At Ashokan, we believe in sustaining a place where music, nature, learning, and community come together for generations to come.

This month, we’re inviting our community to:

  • Create or update your will
  • Consider including a legacy gift to Ashokan
  • Celebrate and recognize the impact of legacy donors who make our future possible

John Johnson’s Legacy Story

When John Johnson first stepped onto Ashokan’s campus in 1999 for Western & Swing Week, he didn’t know his life was about to change.

“It was a feeling of finally coming home at age 46 – to be with like-minded, kind and generous people who loved all kinds of music as I do. I formed great friendships that endure to this day and became a better musician. Maybe more importantly, I feel like Ashokan has made me a better person.”

For John, Ashokan was more than a music camp. It was a place where strangers became friends, where kindness and generosity flowed naturally, and where music wove people together in ways that felt timeless.

“I came for the music, but I stayed for the people. The setting, the food, the laughter—it all works together to make you feel part of something real and rare. That sense of belonging is priceless.”

Over the past 26 years, John has returned again and again, both as a participant and as a welcoming face for newcomers.

“I remember how warmly I was received that first time, and now I try to give that same welcome to others. That feeling of community is hard to come by these days, and I want it to live on long after I’m gone.”

That desire led John to include Ashokan in his will—ensuring future generations will discover the same joy, friendship, and inspiration he found here.

“I can’t think of a more worthwhile legacy than to help others discover and become part of this community of good musical human beings – and then to carry its values back to the world.”
