This week, Ruthy Ungar and Mike Merenda of The Mammals joined Jon Bowermaster on the Green Radio Hour for their annual pre-Hoot catch-up—sharing songs, stories, and a taste of the joy that’s about to unfold at the Ashokan Center.

What began back in 2013 as an idea between Mike, Ruthy, and friends at Ashokan has blossomed into a twice-yearly tradition: The Hoot. Each Hoot brings people of all ages together to celebrate music, nature, and community. Thirteen Summer Hoots later, the tradition is stronger than ever—thanks to the performers, volunteers, and “Hoot Heroes” who pour their hearts into making this festival a beloved gathering.

The Weekend at a Glance

The music begins Friday, August 22, when gates open at 3pm. After the annual Taste the Garden donor gratitude reception, the main stage lights up with sets from Steve Poltz, Hello Oshay, Son Little, and Picnic Committee.

On Saturday, August 23, the day starts with yoga, a gong bath, and family-friendly fun from Ratboy Jr. and Nate the Great. The lineup stretches from Jefferson Hamer and Jenna Nicholls to the sweeping sounds of Midnight on the Water, with a climactic performance by The Mammals themselves. When the stars come out, the music carries on with a bonfire singalong, a square dance, and a late-night songwriter’s round.

Sunday, August 24 brings more morning yoga and a children’s “All-Star Set,” followed by puppetry from Arm-of-the-Sea Theater, dance-worthy sets from What?, Olivia K & the Parkers, and the timeless music of Jay Ungar & Molly Mason. The day closes with none other than Natalie Merchant, before the finale raises the roof one last time.

Throughout the weekend, festival-goers can enjoy Pewter Shop Sessions (intimate acoustic sets), guided hikes, kids’ parades, garden walks, instrument petting zoos, and plenty of informal jamming in the magical musical campground.
