As summer settles over the Catskills, we’re reflecting on a truly meaningful month at the Ashokan Center. June brought together education, music, environmental leadership, and wildlife conservation—all rooted in our mission to build community through shared experiences in nature, history, music, and art.

Final School Field Trips of the Season

We wrapped up our spring outdoor education season with several unforgettable visits from local and regional school groups. Students explored the forest, studied aquatic life at the stream, and experienced the wonder of hands-on learning in nature. Many of these young visitors were engaging with the outdoors in this way for the very first time, and their curiosity and joy remind us why this work matters.

Center for Earth Ethics: Spirit of Place

On June 13–14, we hosted Spirit of Place: A Hudson Valley Climate Training led by Karenna Gore and the Center for Earth Ethics. This inspiring weekend brought together faith and climate leaders for a powerful program exploring bioregionalism, environmental justice, and spiritual practice. With workshops and gatherings held in Ashokan’s fields and forests, participants deepened their understanding of the Hudson Valley’s ecology and renewed their commitment to climate response through ethical and spiritual lenses.

Ravensbeard Wildlife Center Gala

To celebrate 25 years of wildlife rescue and rehabilitation, Ravensbeard Wildlife Center hosted their anniversary gala at the Ashokan Center. Set against a backdrop of tall trees and twilight skies, the evening was filled with warmth, gratitude, and community support. Proceeds from the gala will help ensure that injured and orphaned animals across the region continue to receive the care they need. We were proud to provide the setting for this beautiful milestone event.

Western & Swing Week Kicks Off the Music & Dance Season

Our summer Music & Dance Camps began with a joyful week of rhythm, learning, and connection at Western & Swing Week, hosted by Jay Ungar & Molly Mason. Campers of all backgrounds and levels came together to dive into swing, Western swing, classic country, and Tejano music and dance. With lively classes, evening dance parties, and nonstop jamming, the week was a vibrant reminder of the power of music to build community.

From climate leadership to creative expression, and from student discovery to wildlife care, June reflected the heart of Ashokan’s mission. Thank you to everyone who helped make this month so special—we look forward to sharing more stories as summer unfolds.
